Overview
This article outlines the process of removing a contact, either a household member or an employee, from a Household or Organization record in your Practifi instance. This process maintains the information captured on the member or employee's record and converts it into an Individual record.

Converting a Member or Employee to an Individual
To convert a member of a household or an employee of an organization to an individual:
- Navigate to the Household or Organization record that has the member/employee you want to remove.
- From the Household/Organization Members section of the Overview, click the member's name to open their record in a new tab.
- From the right-hand side of the screen, click the caret and select Convert to Individual.
- A window opens, asking you to confirm you want to convert the member or employee to an Individual record. Click Next.
- The page will refresh and display the new Individual record nested within the window because it still holds a link to the Household or Organization record. Leave these records open to complete the steps in the next section.
Removing the Individual from the Household or Organization
To remove the link between the new Individual record and the Household or Organization record:
- Click the Actions menu on the Individual record to open a drop-down menu.
- Select the Remove from Household or Remove from Organization action from the drop-down menu.
- A pop-up box will appear, guiding you through the considerations of removing this link from the Household or Organization record. Once you are ready to proceed, select Remove to continue.
- A success message is displayed, and the system processes the change. We recommend closing both entity records and refreshing your browser screen to pull this change forward.
When you refresh the Household or Organization record, the member no longer appears in the Household/Organization Members section. You can now locate the new Individual record on the Directory page in your Practifi instance.
Please note: The Individual record is created as a contact. If you want them to be a Client record, you can first promote them to a Prospect record by using the Actions button in the record side panel and selecting the Promote to Prospect option. Once promoted to a Prospect, select the Actions button again and select Promote to Client.
Considerations
An alternative option to using the Remove from Household or Remove from Organization action to remove the link to the Household/Organization record from the Individual record is to delete the link manually. To manually delete the link:
- After selecting the Convert to Individual action, navigate to the Individual record.
- Click the pencil icon in the Primary Entity field, then click the X to remove the name of the Household or Organization record.
- Click away from the field, then scroll down and click Save.
Please note: The Individual record is created as a contact. If you want them to be a Client record, you can first promote them to a Prospect record by using the Actions button in the record side panel and selecting the Promote to Prospect option. Once promoted to a Prospect, select the Actions button again and select Promote to Client. - On the member's Individual record, click the X icon to close the subtab.
- On the Household or Organization record, select the People & Relationships icon.
- Locate the member on the Members list and select the caret icon in the furthest right column.
- Select Delete from the drop-down menu. This will delete the contact's relationship to the household/organization but will not delete the contact's record.
- In the Delete Relationship pop-up, select Delete to finalize the deletion.
